History
Established in 1290
A fourth floor was added to the building in 1892, and the entire facade above the first floor, as well as most window frames and stone jambs, were renovated.
Only in the room on the first floor has the original structure been visibly preserved, with a half-timbered wall to the hallway that likely dates from the 16th century.
On the outer wall, two fields of 16th-century wall paintings were uncovered and restored beside the window. These vibrant murals feature thick-stemmed vines, leaves with stylized fruits, a parrot on the left, and a small bird perched on a vine on the right—beautiful examples of typical artwork from the period.
The Martin’s Guesthouse boasts a rich history, first known as "zem Bramen" (thorn bush) around 1290. Some sections of wall with remnants of a portal, briefly uncovered in 1991, may date from this period.
In 1423, the property was acquired by Mathys Schuler, a chaplain of St. George’s Altar in St. Martin’s Church. This altar, a gift from Adelheid von Eptingen in 1403, eventually gave the building its name, “Eptingerpfrund-Haus”.
In 1542, chaplain Peter Segesser arranged for the division of the property. He purchased the upper corner house on Martinskirchplatz from St. Martin’s Church as a residence for himself and his family. From then on, the house was mainly occupied by craftsmen and officials, including a customs officer of the Rheinbrücke and, in 1585, the tower blower Hans Düttelbach.
The latest renovations of the building began in 2019, driven by a dedicated owner who has been living in Basel for many years. With a deep love for the property, he embarked on an extensive restoration, carefully balancing modern luxury standards with the historic charm and authenticity of the house and its Basel-style architecture. Every effort was made to respect the building's heritage, preserving its unique features and character.
The project required five years of meticulous work to reach the final result, with no detail overlooked. From materials to craftsmanship, every aspect was thoughtfully chosen to honor both the building's past and the demands of modern comfort. The outcome is a harmonious blend of historic ambiance and contemporary elegance, where each detail reflects the owner’s passion and commitment to excellence.
